Diabetics are at a greater risk of developing retinal damage, which can lead to many eye disorders. Protect your eyes from diabetic retinopathy by wearing sunglasses that protect against UV radiation and other important factors. These sunglasses must be safe and good for the eye, protecting against not only UV rays but also harmful blue light.

In this Diabetic & Me article you will learn about:

  • What types of sunglasses are best for your eyes?
  • What lens is best?
  • Should diabetics wear sunglasses?
  • What is the best UV protection?

A common question we get from our diabetic patients is what sunglasses are best for diabetics. In this blog post, I will share with you the best sunglasses for diabetics that will protect their eyes and prevent retinal damage.

What Are the Best Types of Sunglasses for Your Eyes?

This is a question I am asked frequently by diabetics.

There is no one specific type of sunglasses that is better than others. The sunglasses that will work best for your eyes depend on a number of factors, but one thing you need to consider first and foremost is their ability to provide UV protection and safety. I recommend looking for sunglasses with a label that says "UV 400 Protection" or wearing polarized sunglasses.

Generally speaking though, people with diabetes are advised to be careful about the sunglasses they wear because many sunglasses contain harmful chemicals like benzophenones (benzocaine) used in dark tints for anti-glare purposes. These types of sunglasses may actually cause more damage than good; it's important not to cover up too much when outdoors since you still want to receive vitamin D from the sun.

Should Diabetics Wear Sunglasses?

Yes, diabetics can and should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes.

Diabetics can and should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. Wear sunglasses that block UV light, which will help prevent retinal damage.

Sunglasses are important for anyone who spends time outdoors but they're especially critical for diabetics because of the increased risk of eye disorders like diabetic retinopathy due to retina inflammation or diabetes-related blindness problems caused by decreased blood flow in the retina. Diabetic patients must always consult with a doctor before wearing sunglasses as there may be other factors affecting vision such as cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration that could make it unsafe for them to use sunglasses even if they have no other issues related to sight loss from diabetes.

How Do You Protect Your Eyes When You Have Diabetes?

When you have diabetes it's important to protect your eyes. To protect your eyes you should wear sunglasses that are good for your eyes and also protect against UV radiation.

UV-blocking sunglasses with a dark tint are necessary to protect against diabetic retinopathy which may cause damage to the retina, resulting in several sight disorders, some of them severe. In addition to wearing sunglasses, you can take other measures such as cutting out sugar or using insulin injections as well as maintaining healthy blood glucose levels by diet and exercise.

What Sunglasses Do Diabetics Need?

There a few factors your need to take into consideration when buying a pair of sunglasses.

The best sunglasses for people with diabetes should shield their eyes from damaging rays that compromise eye health. These sunglasses have been shown to reduce risk factors associated with diabetes like cataracts and macular edema (swelling) while reducing the risk of developing complications like retinal detachment according.

Lens Material

The material of the lens is more flexible than plastic, Polycarbonate lenses are a popular choice for people with diabetes because they offer the best protection from ultraviolet radiation.

Polycarbonate is chemically stable and less likely to crack or break when dropped. The material can be molded into any shape so it's ideal for eyeglasses that need to fit over large prescription glasses frames.

It also offers UV A/B protection as well as being shatterproof. It does not absorb water vapors which means it keeps its clarity longer. The disadvantage of polycarbonate is that it scratches easily but many lens manufacturers have developed scratch-resistant coatings in recent years.

The range of lenses is important when it comes to selecting sunglasses that suit diabetic's needs but there are definitely features that make certain types better than others: polarized glasses use special filters on both sides of the lens and mirrored lenses reflect light outward from the eyes.

Polarized Glasses

When it comes to UV and light protection it's best to go with polarized lenses.

Polarized lenses use special filters on both sides of the lens and are ideal for protecting your eyes from UV radiation which can lead to retinal damage as well as other factors such as glare, reflections, and scattered light that cause eye fatigue. These factors can be especially damaging for diabetics because they make it difficult to see the screen or read text clearly when driving in a car due to potential changes in vision caused by diabetic retinopathy.

There are two types of polarized lens coatings; linear (LPC) and circular polarization (CP). LPC is better at reducing glare since our brains perceive this type of reflection more quickly than others so it's easier to identify what we're seeing but CP is better at blocking UV light.

For the rest, it doesn't really matter what kind of sunglasses you wear. It can be my size, material, and style of your choice.
